Artists Carol Pairaudeau
and Paula Gamble-Schwarz
are involved in an ongoing drawing conversation. Starting with an agreed theme, the artists independently begin to develop their response to the theme, working in a range of media. However, before the work reaches a conclusion the two artists exchange work, without discussion, leaving each piece they exchange to speak for itself. Each artist then works directly on the piece that they have received. This exchange process continues until one of the artists feels that a piece of work is complete - at which point the work is framed and presented, rather than exchanged.
The drawing conversation involves a high level of trust in handing over creative work to another person. However, the excitement and challenge in responding to work in this way pushes the conversation piece in interesting and unanticipated directions. Knowing when to stop is also an important part of the process.
Paula Gamble-Schwarz is Foundation Studies Programme Director at Loughborough University’s School of the Arts. Carol Pairaudeau has recently completed an MA Art & Design (Studio Practice), also at Loughborough.
